All Our Genders: A Public Discussion || हमारे जेंडर: एक चर्चा _ Aug 11, 2012

Several recent events in India have made it evident that collectively we lack a language to understand those gender positions that do not fit neatly into male and female and that we participate in an active erasure of a range of practices of gender non-conformity from our public life. This gap has led to a very difficult social climate for people - transgender, Hijra or gender variant - who live out such identities on a daily basis and has led to reprehensible situations involving arrests, blackmail and assault. Such events are only the crisis points of an everyday struggle which is marked by a real circumscription that gender non-conforming people face economically and politically, whether at homes, workplaces or schools/colleges.  

We propose a public discussion on this issue for which we have put together a panel of speakers.

भारत में हाल ही के दिनों में हुई कई घटनाओं ने हम सबको ये एहसास कराया है कि किस प्रकार हमारे पास वो भाषा नहीं है जिसके द्वारा हम जेंडर से जुड़े उन अनुभवों को समझ सकें जो स्त्री और पुरुष की संकरी पहचानों में परिभषित नहीं किये जा सकते और किस प्रकार, इस आभाव में, हम सभी समाज द्वारा थोपी गयी जेंडर सम्बन्धी मान्यताओं के विरुद्ध माने जाने वाली अपनी इच्छाओं को अपने सार्वजानिक जीवन से मिटा देते हैं. इस भेद की वजह से कई लोग जैसे कि हिजड़ा या कोई और जिसका व्यवहार या पहचान सामान्य जेंडर मान्यता से अलग हो, के लिए एक बेहद कठिन माहौल बन जाता है. इस वजह से हमें आये दिन भर्त्सना योग्य स्थितयों के बारे में सुनने को मिलता है जिसमें ब्लैकमेलिंग, गिरफ़्तारी और विभिन् प्रकार के उत्पीडन शामिल है. ये स्थितियां जेंडर की संकरी परिभाषा में न आने वाले लोगों के रोज की जिंदगी के संघर्ष के चरम बिंदुओं को व्यक्त करती हैं. रोज के ये संघर्ष वे कॉलेज से लेकर अपने काम करने के स्थानों पर अनुभव करते हैं.

हम इस सन्दर्भ में एक चर्चा प्रस्तावित कर रहें हैं और इसमें चर्चाकारों का एक दल हमारा साथ देगा.
